INS: Meat production up for pigs, sheep, goats and poultry; down for cattle in 2025
The number of slaughters and the carcass weight increased for pigs, sheep, goats and poultry while for cattle and decreased in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) provisional data published on Tuesday.
In December 2025 compared to December 2024, the number of slaughters and the weight in the carcass increased for sheep and goats and poultry and decreased for cattle and pigs.
According to the INS, in December 2025, the number of cattle slaughtered decreased from 44,000 to 41,000 head, while the carcass weight declined compared with the same month of 2024 from 7,146 to 6,803 tonnes. At the level of the entire year, the number of cattle slaughtered dropped from 573,000 to 480,000 head, while carcass weight fell from 80,323 to 79,907 tonnes.
For pigs, fewer animals were slaughtered in December 2025 (682,000 compared with 694,000 head) and carcass weight declined compared with December 2024, from 63,415 to 63,196 tonnes. Over the entire year, slaughterings increased from 3.53 million to 4.01 million pigs, while production rose from 328,590 tonnes to 365,575 tonnes.
In respect to the slaughtering of sheep and goats, the INS data show an increase in December 2025 compared to December 2024 from 311,000 to 313,000 head, with carcass weight being higher (4,570 tonnes compared with 4,649 tonnes). Compared with the previous year, in 2025 slaughterings increased from 5.863 million head to 6.785 million head, while carcass weight rose from 56,230 to 82,211 tonnes.
According to the INS data, slaughterings of poultry increased in December 2025 compared with December 2024, from 27.605 million to 31.468 million head and the carcass weight went up from 46,463 to 50,492 tonnes, while compared with the previous year, in 2025, slaughterings increased from 330.552 million to 366.618 million, and carcass weight rose from 576,325 to 611,309 tonnes.
The average carcass weight recorded in 2025 was 166.5 kilogrammes for cattle, 91.1 kilogrammes for pigs, 12.1 kilogrammes for sheep/goats and 1.7 kilogrammes for poultry.
