Ambassador Chirila: As long as ideal of union is alive in Moldova, Romania has a moral obligation to support us

Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest Victor Chirila said on Tuesday that as long as the ideal of union remains alive in Moldova, Romania has a 'moral and historical obligation' to support Chisinau 'with everything in its power.'

'The ideal of the Union with Romania is a natural, moral and historically legitimate one for the Bessarabians/Moldovans/Romanians of the Republic of Moldova and it will be so as long as the Romanian ethos exists, as long as Romanian is spoken on the left bank of the Prut. The ideal of the Union with Romania is not anti-Republic of Moldova, it is anti-imperialist. It is driven by this ideal that, on August 31, 1989, we regained our right to speak Romanian, acquired/declared the Republic of Moldova's independence, resisted the Cossacks and the Russian occupation army in the Transnistrian region, and today we enjoy freedom and democracy,' the diplomat wrote on Facebook.

According to him, the ideal of Union with Romania is synonymous with the return to the world of Western civilization, democracy, freedom and human dignity, and is the quintessence of integration with the European Union, where, naturally, the Republic of Moldova will find itself alongside Romania.

'Our Romanianness, which also includes the ideal of Union, is the cornerstone of our strategic partnership with Romania, which supports us unconditionally in all circumstances. As long as the ideal of Union will animate us towards Europe, towards freedom, towards Romanianness, towards Romania, we will build bridges, highways, railways, power lines, to inextricably link us with Romania and the European Union. It is time to fully assume our Romanianness, to recognize that our state animated by freedom, democracy and equal respect for all minority ethnicities has a Romanian ethos and a Romanian heart. Trust between our states is based on the complete assumption of this truth. And, finally, as long as the Ideal of Union is alive in the Republic of Moldova, Romania will have the moral and historical obligation to help us with everything in its power. There is no more solid and indestructible bridge between our states than our Romanianness,' the ambassador conveyed.

Victor Chirila mentioned that he wrote this message as a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, adding that he is also Romanian, although he does not have Romanian citizenship. 'I am Romanian, but I do not have Romanian citizenship, which I hope to regain without asking for it,' he added.

His remarks come a day after Moldovan President Maia Sandu told British journalists that regional and global developments make the survival of countries like the Republic of Moldova increasingly complicated, and EU accession is vital for protecting sovereignty. For the first time, the president publicly stated that, if a referendum were held, she would vote in favor of her country's reunification with Romania. She acknowledged, however, that such a move lacks broad political support, which is why the desire for European integration remains the only solution for the survival of the Republic of Moldova, MOLDPRES reported on Monday.
