Triple victory for Romania's baritone Damian at Operalia 2025
Romanian baritone Mihai Damian, a soloist of the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca, on Monday was congratulated on his 'exceptional' performance: three prizes at the World Opera Competition Operalia founded by maestro Placido Domingo, one of the most prestigious lyrical competitions in the world.
'Congratulations, Mihai Damian. I am glad to see a Romanian artist who, through the strength and elegance of his voice, takes Romania where it belongs - on the great stages of the world,' Culture Minister Demeter Andras Istvan said in a social media post.
At the competition that took place in Bulgaria, in Sofia, between October 20 and 26, at the Bulgaria Concert Hall and Ivan Vazov National Theatre House, two major landmarks of the European music scene, Mihai Damian was awarded the First Prize for male voice, the Rolex Prize of the Audience and a Special Prize from Bulgaria's Ministry of Culture.
According to Demeter, this triple recognition is a remarkable personal triumph, and also confirmation of the value of the Romanian school of opera singing and the artistic excellence cultivated in Cluj-Napoca.
'Through talent, expressiveness and scenic force, Mihai Damian becomes the fifth Romanian artist to win the Operalia competition, along with Carmen Oprisanu (1995), Stefan Pop (2010), Ioan Hotea (2015) and Adela Zaharia (2017). Mihai Damian's success honours the Romanian lyrical community and confirms, once again, the value of the artists trained in Romania.'
