Area of organic agriculture in Romania increases by 160% in the last 12 years
The area of organic agriculture in Romania has registered a 160% increase between 2013 and 2024, currently reaching over 780,000 hectares, or 6% of the country's agricultural land, according to data presented on Wednesday on the occasion of the National Organic Agriculture Day.
'Organic agriculture is not just an alternative, but a necessity for a greener, healthier Romania and closer to sustainability values', said Viorel Morarescu, the ambassador of Organic Agriculture in Romania and director of the Directorate for Policies in the Vegetal Sector within the Agriculture Ministry, quoted in a press release.
He stated that the Agriculture Ministry is carrying out 27 projects in the field, with a total value of over 22 million euros. At the same time, professional associations have drawn European funds of approximately 5 million euros, and the results obtained provide 'confidence and motivation' for the expansion of organic farming. Morarescu called on control and certification bodies to act with 'rigor and professionalism', so that the development of the sector is sustainable and credible.
The event dedicated to organic farming was opened on Wednesday by Violeta Musat, Secretary of State in the Agriculture Ministry, and brought together farmers, associations, professional organizations, representatives of public institutions and academia, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of organic farming. 'Today we celebrate not just a type of agriculture, but a vision of Romania's rural future, based on respect for nature, soil and consumers, being the expression of the balance between tradition and innovation, between care for the environment and responsibility towards future generations', the secretary of state said.
Ministry officials congratulated farmers, professional organizations and partners who contribute to the development of the sector, highlighting Romania's success at the European Union Awards for Organic Farming 2025, where two Romanian projects ranked on the podium: Herta Bio Apicole (second place, best organic enterprise) and Moving Market 'Din drag de Bucovina', coordinated by the Suceava County Agriculture Directorate (second place, best organic trader).
Representatives of institutional partners also participated in the event. Sorin Mierlea, president of InfoCons, announced the launch of a European program dedicated to protecting rural consumers and supporting small organic producers, and George Badescu, executive director of the Association of Large Commercial Networks in Romania (AMRCR), reiterated the support of commercial networks for promoting organic products and proposed solutions for streamlining their distribution.
During the meeting, the participants agreed to initiate a project to promote organic products from the beekeeping and poultry sectors and stressed the importance of introducing them in public units - schools, hospitals, the army and administration - in order to facilitate the valorization of production at the national level. MADR officials also insisted on the need to promote organic products on European and international markets. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Mariana Nica; EN - writing by: Bogdan Gabaroi)
