Imagine din galeria Agerpres

The presence on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum of legendary pianist Martha Argerich and the performance of Oedipe by George Enescu are the highlight events scheduled on Monday within the George Enescu International Festival, informs the event's website.

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Charles Dutoit and featuring Martha Argerich as soloist, will perform on Monday, starting at 16:30, at the Romanian Athenaeum. This will be the second evening music lovers will spend with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, following its performance on Sunday afternoon. The programme will include Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite M. 60, Piano Concerto in G major M. 83 and Valses nobles et sentimentales M. 61, as well as Claude Debussy's La Mer L. 109.

Martha Argerich was initially scheduled to perform on Sunday, August 31, at 19:30, at the Palace Hall, but according to ARTEXIM, 'for personal reasons, she had to cancel both her concert within the Enescu Festival and her concert at the Lucerne Festival on August 28,' being replaced by pianist Seong-Jin Cho, considered one of the most important pianists of his generation.

With a brilliant career and an artistic reputation that has left a deep mark on the concert scene, at over 83 years of age Martha Argerich is one of the great ladies of the piano. She has won numerous prestigious piano competitions, performed with the world's leading orchestras and renowned conductors, given recitals alongside great artists such as Mischa Maisky, Alexandre Rabinovitch, Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim, and her recordings - released by EMI, Sony, Philips, Teldec, and DGG - have been awarded by Grammy and Gramophone. A cherished presence at the George Enescu International Festival and an enthusiastic supporter of young musicians, Martha Argerich has become artistic director of the Beppu Festival in Japan. In 1999, she founded in Buenos Aires the International Piano Competition and Festival bearing her name, in 2002 - the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, and in 2018 - the Martha Argerich Festival in Hamburg.

The Bucharest National Opera will present on Monday, starting at 19:00, the opera Oedipe by George Enescu. The production is directed by Stefano Poda, with musical direction by maestro Tiberiu Soare, featuring the Orchestra, Chorus and Children's Choir of the Bucharest National Opera. The cast includes Ionut Pascu - Oedip (baritone), Ruxandra Donose - Jocasta (mezzo-soprano), Ramona Zaharia - Sphinx (mezzo-soprano), Vazgen Gazaryan - High Priest (bass), Paul Curievici - Laius (tenor), Adrian Sâmpetrean - Creon (bass), Kaarin Cecilia Phelps - Antigone (soprano), Alexei Botnarciuc - Tiresias (bass), Andrei Lazar - Shepherd (tenor), Daniel Filipescu - Theseus (bass), Andreea Iftimescu - Merope (contralto), Damian Vlad - Guard (bass), Zoica Sohterus - Theban Woman (contralto), and Leonard Bernad - Phorbas (bass).

The lyrical tragedy Oedipe was composed by George Enescu between 1921 and 1931, with its world premiere taking place on March 13, 1936, at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. The Romanian premiere, directed by Jean Ranzescu, was staged on September 22, 1958, at the Opera and Ballet Theatre (the current Bucharest National Opera), at the close of the first edition of the George Enescu International Festival.

At the Bucharest National Opera, Enescu's masterpiece has seen several productions, signed by directors Catalina Buzoianu, Andrei Serban, Petrica Ionescu, Anda Tabacaru Hogea and Valentina Carrasco, with other stagings at the Romanian Opera in Cluj and the Romanian National Opera in Iasi. The most recent staging of Oedipe, directed by Stefano Poda, premiered on January 15, 2023, on the occasion of National Culture Day and the 70th anniversary of Romania's most important opera stage.

The 27th edition of the George Enescu International Festival is taking place in Bucharest and across the country until September 21. This year's theme is 'Celebrations,' marking the 70th anniversary of the composer's death.
