President Dan: Book, a bridge of language, identity and European belonging between Romania and Moldova
The book is not only a cultural product, but also a bridge of language, identity and European belonging between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, President Nicusor Dan conveyed on Wednesday, at the opening of the Chisinau Bookfest International Book Fair.
The message was delivered on his behalf by Catalina Galer, state adviser with the Department of Administration, Public Policy and Civil Society.
The event in Chisinau is held under the High Patronage of the Presidents of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
'We continue a tradition of dialogue and support for books in the Romanian language on both sides of the Prut River, a tradition of recognising culture as a factor of unity, solidarity, development and the affirmation of our shared democratic and European aspirations,' the Romanian President underscored.
In his message, he referred to the friendship between the two neighbouring countries.
'In the context of the privileged relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the book is not merely a cultural product, it becomes a bridge of language, identity and European belonging. I hope the discussions, meetings and debates hosted by Bookfest Chisinau will provide a true agora, where we can share our ideas, aspirations and future projects,' the President conveyed.
Nicusor Dan also highlighted that, thanks to books: 'We reconnect and engage in free dialogue, sharing ideas and gaining understanding beyond the iron curtain of ideology, war, prejudice and manipulation.'
'Often in history, books have been censored, banned, even burned by dictators who instead resorted to oppression, violence and murder. We remember the years of communist dictatorship, when writing or reading a book posed a risk. Today, we have the freedom to read and to treat books as allies in seeking and asserting the truth. We must trust in books, seek the light of their spirit, which can restore our lucidity and discernment,' he added.
According to the President, books give people access to hope, beauty, and truth: 'They guide us to discover history, understand the conflicts that marked our recent past, and reach the essence of the human values that supported many generations in resisting totalitarianism.'
