Steluta Lucia Rodica Coposu, the youngest sister of Corneliu Coposu, the former chairman of the Christian and Democratic National Peasant Party, and president of the foundation bearing his name, passed away on Thursday morning.

The announcement was made Thursday by Ion-Andrei Gherasim, executive chairman of the Corneliu Coposu Foundation, in a public statement.

'With a heart broken by grief, I announce that this morning Madam President of the Corneliu Coposu Foundation, the youngest sister of the Senior and the last direct descendant of the much-tried Coposu family, Steluta Lucia Rodica Coposu, has ascended to Heaven to reunite with all her loved ones,' the message reads.

In 2009, together with her sister Flavia Balescu-Coposu, she was decorated by His Majesty King Michael I of Romania with the Cross of the Royal House of Romania for her lifelong civic activity and dedication to preserving the memory of her brother.

Details regarding the date, time, and location of the funeral will be announced later.

Corneliu Coposu was the leader of the Christian and Democratic National Peasant Party (PNTCD) after the 1989 Revolution. He played a key role in re-establishing the party under this name as the successor of the National Peasant Party, which had been banned by the communist regime. Coposu served as PNTCD chairman from 1990 to 1995 and was an important figure in Romania's post-communist opposition. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Sebastian Olaru; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
