Ammunition worth roughly EUR 5 ml impacted by fire at Cugir Mechanical Plant

There were some 400,000 14.5 cartridges stored, ready for delivery, in the hall of the Cugir Mechanical Plant that was engulfed in flames Saturday morning, the Alba County Police Inspectorate said in a statement. The ammunition batch was worth an estimated 5 million euros, and there is a high likelihood that the entire amount was compromised.
Police are investigating, collecting images from the video surveillance systems of the facility and in the locality, interviewing the unit's employees and gathering documents, the statement informs.
Experts from the National Forensics Institute of the Romanian Police Inspectorate General are also working at the scene.
According to the statement, 'from data available so far, approximately 400,000 caliber 14.5 cartridges were stored in the warehouse, ready for delivery, and as per a first assessment by company representatives, approximately 130,000 cartridges were destroyed; there is a high likelihood that the rest of the ammunition was compromised too.'
According to initial reports, the value of the ammunition stored in the warehouse is 5 million euros.
A fire accompanied by explosions broke out on Saturday morning around 1:00 inside a hall of the Mechanical Plant Cugir S.A. - National Company Romarm S.A., spreading across 700 sqm; police and firefighters from several counties responded to the incident, including with water-shooting robotic units.
