ForMin Toiu, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Berset discuss fight against Russian aggression
Minister of foreign affairs, Oana Toiu, had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Alain Berset, on the sidelines of the Rome Conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, which takes place in Rome until Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
The two officials addressed topics of common interest: the fight against the aggression of the Russian Federation, the development of mechanisms to inventory the damages caused by the war and to recover their value from the aggressor state, the return home of children abducted during the war, the same source shows.
The minister emphasised the role of Romania's delegations in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in initiating and supporting these steps, a contribution also appreciated by Alain Berset.
In this context, Oana Toiu emphasised the importance of holding perpetrators accountable and continuing the fight against impunity. In the same context, she welcomed the signing of the basic documents for the Council of Europe Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
The two dignitaries also addressed the initiative of the CoE Secretary General regarding the New Pact for the Promotion of Democracy. Thus, the Romanian foreign minister pointed out that in the current regional context there is a need to revitalise the democratic process on the continent, to have a constant and transparent dialogue with the society and to strengthen the mechanisms for monitoring foreign interference.
