Events organised by ICR London in Scotland, as part of 'Queen Marie 150' Season
The 'Queen Marie 150' Season continues from July 2 to 4 in Edinburgh, where the Scottish public is invited to discover the multifaceted personality of the Sovereign of Greater Romania, who was also an artist, writer and diplomat.
According to a press release from the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) London, sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, the events in Edinburgh will take place in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia of Romania, whose exhibition 'Of Stone and Steel. A Voyage into the World of Urbex' will open on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the French Institute in Edinburgh.
Princess Sofia, Queen Marie's great-granddaughter, inherited her passion for the arts and literature, becoming a renowned name in photography and author of children's literature. The exhibition, created in collaboration with Jean Milligan and Irina Andreea Cristea, brings together over 20 photographic panels that offer an impressive insight into the world of abandoned buildings in Romania.
At the National Library of Scotland, Dr. Shona Kallestrup, art historian and professor at the University of St. Andrews, will present, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the sovereign's journey from princess of Great Britain to queen of Romania in the conference 'Princess Marie of Edinburgh: Queen-Writer of Romania.'
Based on Queen Marie's volumes preserved in the collections of the National Library of Scotland, Dr. Kallestrup will highlight Her Majesty's contribution to strengthening the country's image in the world. The event will begin with a message to the public from Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia.
On the last day of the events in Scotland, on Friday at 6:30 p.m., at the French Institute in Edinburgh, as part of the reading performance 'The Queen's War,' Romanian-British actress Bianca Topor will present the audience with a faithful portrait of the sovereign, captured during a period of turmoil but also of hope, inspired by the pages of the queen's war diaries.
According to ICR London, the programme dedicated to the sovereign of Greater Romania is generating considerable interest, with the prestigious daily newspaper The Scotsman already publishing a comprehensive editorial by journalist Jane Bradley presenting the queen's biography and discussing at length the Institute's initiative, carried out in partnership with the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh, the National Library of Scotland and the University of St Andrews.
Access to the events is free of charge, with reservations for the opening and performance to be made at edinburgh@mae.ro, and for the conference on the website of the National Library of Scotland.
This year, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London is dedicating a series of important events to Queen Marie of Romania, on the 150th anniversary of her birth. The programme pays tribute to a figure who forged an exemplary bond between Romania and the United Kingdom and left her mark on modern European history. The series of events included in the 'Queen Marie 150' Season programme opened in June 2025 with the '1919 - Royal Mission' theatre performance, a theatrical homage of Queen Marie - the sovereign who became a symbol of Romanian diplomacy.
