DISB2025/Moldova's central bank governor Anca Dragu: Digital finance is no longer just a trend, it is a reality
Digital finance is no longer just a trend, but a reality, and it means lower fees, easier access, higher speed and increased productivity, the governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, stated on Thursday at the Digital Innovation Summit Bucharest (DISB) 2025 event.
'The presence of a central bank governor may not have been very common a few years ago. But today, it is something normal. Because we need to implement new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, to deal with cybersecurity. We need to use these new technologies to provide the best financial services to citizens, companies and the entire financial sector in general. Digital finance is no longer just a trend, but a present reality. From mobile wallets to algorithmic trading and decentralized finance platforms, technology is reshaping the way we access capital, conduct transactions and design financial services. For Moldova, digital finance is a path to growth and, in fact, to sustainable growth,' Dragu emphasised.
She added that digitalisation intensifies competition in the financial sector to the benefit of companies and citizens.
'Digitalisation also intensifies competition in the financial sector, pushing traditional banking institutions to think outside the box, and the beneficiaries are the citizens and companies. As we digitize our financial ecosystem, the National Bank of Moldova is investing in innovative solutions, including a modernised national payment system, capacity development and higher cybersecurity standards. We are developing supervisory frameworks for stablecoins, which are rapidly emerging as key instruments in tomorrow's payments and settlements. The regulation on crypto assets provides a comprehensive framework with which Moldova is actively aligning. We are working on this legal framework to make significant progress in the coming period, by the end of the year and next year,' the representative of the National Bank of Moldova said.
According to Dragu, the Republic of Moldova sees digitalisation as a model of innovation and sustainable growth, not as a threat.
