Civic organisations ask authorities, parliamentarians and presidential candidates firm pro-European stance
The civic organisations that launched 'Manifest pentru Europa' ('Manifesto for Europe') in March have sent a document to authorities, parliamentarians and presidential candidates, requesting a firm pro-European stance and the commitment to concrete measures to protect Romania's Euro-Atlantic future.
'The 29 civic organisations that launched the 'Manifesto for Europe' in March are sending today this document, signed by over 10,000 Romanian citizens from all social categories, to authorities, parliamentarians and presidential candidates. The manifesto is accompanied by official letters through which the organisations request a firm pro-European stance and the assumption of concrete measures to protect Romania's Euro-Atlantic destiny. In a crucial moment for the future of our country, these 29 civic organisations emphasise the importance of Romania's membership in the European Union and its alignment with Western democratic values. In this context, we address a firm call to the Romanian Presidency, Government, Parliament and presidential candidates to clearly express their commitment to Romania's European path and act accordingly,' reads a press release sent to AGERPRES.
According to the aforementioned source, through the four letters addressed to key institutions, the signatories ask the President of Romania to actively defend European values and use all constitutional mechanisms to strengthen Romania's pro-European direction.
'We ask the Government to implement public policies that strengthen the rule of law, ensure transparency and good governance, and keep Romania on the path of necessary reforms to strengthen democracy. Parliament is called to adopt clear and coherent legislation that supports Romania's European path and reject any initiative that could harm democracy and the rule of law. Presidential candidates are urged to publicly and unequivocally support European values, present concrete measures for their defence, and avoid populist and Eurosceptic rhetoric that could undermine national and European cohesion,' the release further reads.
The civic organisations point out that their call is not just a symbolic act, but a 'firm demand' from civil society, which cannot remain 'passive' in the face of risks that any deviation from the democratic path may pose.
'Romania's future is in the European Union, and citizens, alongside civic organisations, are watching over the respect for this fundamental commitment,' they conclude.
Among the signing organisations there are: Coruptia ucide, Initiativa Romania, Grupul pentru Dialog Social, Societatea Timisoara, Comunitatea Declic, EuRoManifest, FADERE (Federation of Associations of Romanians in Europe - 120 associations from Europe and the United States), Agent Green, Reset, Geeks for Democracy, Asociatia ACCEPT, Freedom House Romania, Ploiesti pentru oameni.
