Tennis: Gabriela Ruse defeats Irina Begu in Australian Open first round
Gabriela Ruse defeated Irina Begu 6-4, 6-0 on Tuesday in Melbourne, in a Romanian showdown in the first round of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Ruse (27 years old, 125th in the WTA ranking), who came from the qualifiers, won after 1 hour and 19 minutes of play, in her first encounter with Begu (34 years old, 80th in the WTA ranking).
Gabriela Ruse was clearly superior in terms of winners (22-11) and made fewer unforced errors than her opponent (14-20).
Ruse secured a cheque of 200,000 Australian dollars and 110 WTA points, while Begu received 132,000 dollars and 10 WTA points.
In the second round, Ruse will face a representative from the United States, either Madison Keys or Ann Li. This is Ruse's second appearance in the main draw in Melbourne, after reaching the second round in 2022.
