Vlad Stancu wins a silver medal in 400m freestyle at Otopeni European Junior Swimming Championships

The Romanian athlete Vlad Stancu won the silver medal in the final of the 400m freestyle race, on Sunday, at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, with the time of 3min50sec61/100, his third individual podium, after gold from 1,500m freestyle and silver from 800m freestyle.

Stancu, 16 years old, with CSA Steaua, had a slow start in the final of the 400m freestyle, turned fifth at 50m and 100m, was even the seventh at 200m, but then came back fantastically. He turned the fourth at 350m and on the last length of the basin accelerated and managed the second time, 3min50sec61/100, on a par with the Polish Krzysztof Chmielewski. The gold medal was won by Italian Lorenzo Galossi with 3min48sec14/100. It was the last final on Sunday with Romanian presence.

At these European championships in Otopeni, Stancu won four medals, two gold medals in the 1,500m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle, two silver in the 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle.

Thus, the Romanian delegation collected nine medals at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni: 5 gold - men's 4x100m freestyle relay (David Popovici, Vlad Stancu, Stefan Cozma and Patrick Sebastian Dinu), David Popovici at 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, Vlad Stefan Stancu at 1,500m freestyle, and 4 silver - mixed 4x100m freestyle (David Popovici, Patrick Sebastian Dinu, Bianca Costea and Rebecca Aimee Diaconescu), Bianca Costea at 50m freestyle and Vlad Stancu at 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle.AGERPRES(RO - author: Teodor Ciobanu, editor: Adrian Dragut; EN - editor: Maria Voican)
