PM Ciuca: Athletics competitions hosted by Romania offer a chance to promote sports
Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca on Wednesday welcomed Chairman of the European Athletics Federation Dobromir Karamarinov and Secretary General of the International Athletics Federation Christian Milz to discuss Romania hosting the European Athletics U20 Championships in 2023.
Ciuca is quoted as underlying in a press statement the opportunity offered by this important event to draw more young people to sports and gearing them towards great performance.
"Romania is internationally acclaimed for the results of its athletes throughout history. It is important for the younger generation to know and be inspired by the role models offered by our golden athletes, such as the chair of the Romanian Athletics Federation, Anisoara Cusmir-Stanciu, the 1984 Olympic Games long jump champion and holder of four world records. The prestigious competitions we host give us the chance to promote sports and generate new brilliant sporting careers. The Romanian government offers its full support for the organisation of this European sporting event and will continue to be actively involved in the good development of the prestigious competitions hosted by Romania," said Ciuca.
The chairman of the European Athletics Federation thanked Romania for the organisational efforts for the smooth running of the Balkan Athletics Championships in Craiova, which ended last week.
At the same time, Romania's initiative to take over holding the European U20 Championships was appreciated, as the host city of Cluj-Napoca is said to offer the necessary infrastructure living up to the standards related to such a competitive level.
More than 20,000 participants and members of the technical staff from 49 countries are expected in Cluj-Napoca for six days. The championships will be broadcast by the European Broadcasting Union network to about 70 television channels.
The meeting was also attended by Gheorghe Popescu, an honorary adviser to the prime minister of Romania, and chair of the Romanian Athletics Federation Anisoara Cusmir-Stanciu.
