Joint celebration of National Culture Day, Jan 15, in Bucharest and Chisinau
The Romanian Academy and the Moldovan Academy of Sciences will jointly celebrate the 16th edition of National Culture Day on January 15, starting at 11:00.
The event will take place simultaneously in the Grand Hall of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest and in the Azure Hall of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences in Chisinau, the academic forum announced on Monday.
The presidents of the two academic institutions, Acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop and Acad. Ion Tighineanu, will deliver opening speeches at the festive meeting, moderated by Professor Ioan Cristescu, general director of the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
Also addressing the audience will be poet Ana Blandiana and philosopher Mircea Flonta, full members of the Romanian Academy; literary critic and historian Mihai Cimpoi, member of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences; Professor Marta Petreu of 'Babes-Bolyai' University of Cluj-Napoca; and academician Mircea Martin, president of the Philology and Literature Section of the Romanian Academy.
The session of communications will be followed by the launch of the 'National Culture Day' postage stamp issue, presented by general director of National Stamp Company Romfilatelia, Gabriel Bulumac, and by a recital given by actress Maia Morgenstern.
The program will end with a musical performance by the ARCO string quintet, made up of students of the 'Dinu Lipatti' National College of Arts and the 'George Enescu' National College of Music in Bucharest.
The event is part of the Joint Action Plan for 2026, a festive year marking 160 years since the founding of the Romanian Academy and 65 years since the establishment of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences.
Since January 15, 2011, Romanian culture has been celebrated through an official national holiday established on the birth anniversary of poet Mihai Eminescu. National Culture Day was initiated by academician Eugen Simion, president of the Romanian Academy at that time, and legislated by the Romanian Parliament in 2010.
