The Romanian Agency for Saving Human Life at Sea (ARSVOM) intervened on Wednesday evening to assist a ship flying under the Comoros flag near Sulina, which reported a fire on board.
According to Adrian Mihalcioiu, leader of the Free Trade Union of Seafarers, the ship was targeted in attacks in the Sulina roadstead.
Interim National Defence Minister Radu Miruta mentioned that checks are under way to establish whether the ship had been hit by a drone.
'We were informed via the vessel's radio communications that a fire had broken out. A vessel was dispatched to assist it. Shortly afterwards, they announced that the fire had been extinguished, that they did not need assistance and that they did not wish to enter port either. The vessel [sent to assist] returned because there was no longer a fire on board and neither people nor the ship were in danger. The ship was empty and had been waiting in that area for several days. Whether it was hit by a drone or not is being investigated to establish the facts. No drone heading towards this ship was detected on the Ministry of National Defence's radars. Beyond these points, this is a matter of significant gravity, given that such incidents are occurring in the Romanian territorial waters,' Miruta said on Wednesday evening on Digi 24 private television station.
