The painting 'Little Peasant Girl Resting' by Grigorescu sells for 365,000EUR, settles new record

The painting "Little Peasant Girl Resting" by Nicolae Grigorescu has been sold for 365,000 EUR, on Thursday evening, at the winter auction organized by Artmark House, according to a press release of the Artmark.

The sale represents a new record for the Romanian art market (after 1990), in the context in which Grigorescu's work, oil on canvas, has been initially estimated to worth between 100,000 and 200,000 euros.

The painting is breaking thus the record established in 2018 by another work by Grigorescu, "Peasant Girl with White Headscarf," sold back then for 340,000 euros.

Artmark sold a total of four works by Nicolae Grigorescu on Thursday evening, their total value accounting for more than half a million euros.

The work "Shepherd with His Flock of Sheep" was sold for 95,000 euros, and the works "Ox Carts, On the Field" and "Hay Gathering" were sold for 40,000 euros and 50,000 euros respectively.

Another work that was sold for 47,500 euros on Thursday evening belonged to painter Eustatiu Stonescu, and shows the Wagner concerts that took place at the Romanian Athenaeum in 1937, the painting, which dates from 1946, being called "Concert at the Athenaeum (conducted by George Enescu)". This is the most valuable work of this artist so far (his previous record was settled in 2012 by his work "The Lamp from Draghiceni", which was sold for 36,000 euros).

The next events of the auction house will have Christmas as a theme, with jewelry and decorative art to be put up for auction. AGERPRES (RO - author: Florentina Peia, editor: Mihai Simionescu, EN - author: Cristina Zaharia)
