Romanian table tennis player Bernadette Szocs has made sensation with her qualification for the semifinals of the World Table Tennis Tournament (WTT Finals), after defeating Japanese Satsuki Odo (world's no. 8), 3-0 (14-12, 11-3, 11-5), in the quarterfinals on Friday in Kitakyushu (Japan).

Szocs needed only 20 minutes to get past Odo.

The player, who is registered with CSA Steaua and is ranked 17th in the world, had already defeated another Japanese athlete, Hina Hayata, seed no. 4, in the round of 16, with a score of 3-1 (12-10, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6).

On Saturday, in the semifinal, Szocs will face China's Manyu Wang, seed no. 2 at this tournament and also world's no. 2.

The other semifinal will bring face to face China's Xingtong Chen and Yidi Wang (seed no. 3).

Bernadette Szocs is participating in the Tournament of Champions for the second time in a row, after Olympic champion Meng Cheng withdrew.

Szocs has managed to secure a bronze medal for her, at this competition, after stopping in the round of 16 last year.

The WTT Finals, which end the competition season this year, brings together in Kitakyushu the best 16 singles players of the world, both in the women's and men's rankings, along with the best eight teams, also men's and women's. Europe had only two representatives in the women's singles event, Austrian Sofia Polcanova (world's no. 14) and Bernadette Szocs.
