The protocol on the establishment of the National Alliance of Greater Romania, "under the dome" of the Greater Romania Party (PRM), was signed on Sunday, this coalition being aimed at promoting "the ideals and concerns" of Vatra Romaneasca (the Romanian Hearth), the coordinating chairman of the alliance, former senator Dorel Onaca, told AGERPRES.

"We are an initiative group made up of members or sympathisers of the true patriots' parties and we start from the realisation that the current parliamentary parties have completely deviated from the line of national interest, a direction constantly promoted by Vatra Romaneasca since its establishment in February 1990. Leaving the national line of political conduct is the main cause of the unacceptable situation in which we have ended up as a people, as a state, as a civil society. We believe that, in the face of the difficult, desperate situation in which Romanian society finds itself, the only solution is for the program elaborated by Vatra Romaneasca to be endorsed and promoted by a Political Alliance. We need an Alliance dedicated to the ideals and concerns that have legitimised Vatra Romaneasaă in public life, which is why we have decided to set up the National Alliance of Greater Romania, under the dome of the Greater Romania Party," reads the Alliance's protocol.

The new alliance will promote "three cardinal virtues for a healthy public life: honesty, professional competence and the ability to devote oneself to national interests", qualities that will constitute "the criteria for selection and promotion" in party structures.

According to Dorel Onaca, 10 political parties signed the protocol on Sunday, while 26 others announced their intention to join the alliance.

Onaca said that the candidates for the parliamentary and presidential elections are to be evaluated, among whom he and (former mayor of the Cluj-Napoca city, ed. n.) Gheorghe Funar are in the race for the Cotroceni. The Alliance will also take into consideration, in the "political and sociological" evaluation of the presidential candidates, the leaders of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Marcel Ciolacu, the National Liberal Party (PNL), Nicolae Ciuca, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, and the independents Mircea Geoana, Cozmin Gusa and Cristian Diaconescu.

The national convention to set up the Alliance will take place on August 25 at the Palace of the Parliament, when the candidates supported by the coalition for the parliamentary and presidential elections will be presented.
