Romanian Academy, Moldova's Academy of Sciences to convene in Romanian Language Day joint session
This year, the Romanian Academy will celebrate the Day of the Romanian Language in a joint session with Moldova's Academy of Sciences on August 31 at the Romanian Academy Auditorium.
Opening the event will be the chaimen of the two academies, Ioan-Aurel Pop and Ion Tighineanu. The event and will take place in a mixed virtual and in-person format, and it can be watched on the Zoom platform, the Romanian Academy announced in a social media post.
Delivering papers to the session will be the following academicians: Ioan-Aurel Pop - "The ancient Romanian language in the vision of Eugen Coseriu"; Mircea Dumitru, vice-president of the Romanian Academy - "Eulogy to the Romanian language. At the beginning of the philosophical vocabulary; some remarks regarding the Eminescu's e experience of Kantian readings"; Mihai Cimpoi, chairman of the Advisory Council of Academicians, Moldova's Academy of Sciences - "The Romanian Language - The house of our being"; Gheorghe Ghidirim, Academy of Sciences - "The Romanian language - the language of all of us"; Gheorghe Chivu, chairman of the Philology and Literature Section of the Romanian Academy - "The Vitality of the Romanian language"; Valeriu Matei, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, general director of the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy, "Battle for the legalisation of the Romanian language and the Latin alphabet in the Republic of Moldova."
Also giving speeches will be university professors Rodica Zafiu, researcher with the Iorgu Iordan - Alexandru Rosetti Linguistics Institute of the Romanian Academy - "The Romanian language amidst globalisation"; Viorel Vizureanu, dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, director of the Constantin Radulescu-Motru Institute of Philosophy and Psychology of the Romanian Academy - "Cultural values of the Romanian language in the activity of Saint Antim Ivireanul", Liliana Ionescu-Ruxandoiu, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest - "Is the Romanian language a sui-generis language? Historical and communicative considerations."
The festive session celebrating the Day of the Romanian Language will continue with the opening in Chisinau, Moldova, of the 12th edition of the World Congress of Eminescologists.
During the event, after the opening speech by Academician Mihai Cimpoi and a greeting message from MEP Maria Grapini, an evocation of "Academician Eugen Simion at 90" will take place, with Mircea Martin, Ion Hadarca and Ioan Paval, the mayor of Dumbraveni, expected to speak.
On this occasion, the books "Eugen Simion, man of the entire culture" by Mihai Cimpoi, and "Texts about Bessarabia" by Eugen Simion, will be released.
Romanian Language Day is celebrated every year on August 31 as a result of a 2011 legislative initiative approved by the Romanian Parliament under Law 53/2013. Romanian Language Day was established to coincide with the similar celebration created in 1990 in Moldova - Our Language Day - to convey the message that the Romanian language is a language spoken not only within the national borders, but also beyond them.
