'Stefan cel Mare' University of Suceava to organise European Universities Handball Championship in 2029

Image

'Stefan cel Mare' University of Suceava (USV) has been awarded the right to host the 2029 European Universities Handball Championship, according to the official award letter sent by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the university announced on Thursday.

The decision was made by the EUSA Executive Committee at its meeting on 24 October 2026, following an assessment of the bid submitted by the university in Suceava. Competition to secure hosting rights in the handball category was particularly intense, with three candidate cities reaching the final stage. Following the evaluation process, Suceava, represented by USV, was selected to host the 2029 edition, ahead of bids from Ankara (Türkiye) and Varazdin (Croatia).

'Being awarded the right to host this competition recognises the ability of 'Stefan cel Mare' University of Suceava to contribute to the development of European university sport and provides an opportunity to strengthen the international visibility of both the university and the city of Suceava,' USV said in a press release.

Securing the right to host the 2029 European Universities Handball Championship is particularly significant in view of the achievements of USV's men's handball team.

The Suceava team has won the European Universities Championship title five times, in 2017, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026. These victories came at competitions held in Malaga (Spain), Lodz (Poland), Podgorica (Montenegro), Debrecen (Hungary) and Salerno (Italy). In 2025, the USV team reached the final once again, winning the silver medal.

'Hosting the European Universities Handball Championship will help promote the city of Suceava as a destination for international sporting competitions and create opportunities for intercultural exchange and stronger ties between European universities. Twelve men's teams and 12 women's teams are expected to take part, representing national university champions from various European countries. In total, more than 1,000 participants from abroad are expected to come to Suceava during the eight days of the event,' USV officials added.
