ForMin Neculaescu: Artificial Intelligence has become a foreign policy and security priority
Artificial Intelligence has become a foreign policy and security priority, Romania's Foreign Minister Dan Neculaescu said on Wednesday in a social media post.
'I represented Romania today at the high-level meeting Call for Control of AI Frontier Models, an initiative of Finland and Norway. Artificial Intelligence has become a foreign policy and security priority. Major advances in the field must go hand in hand with human surveillance, high safety standards and clear rules against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence functions, especially with regard to cyber threats and disinformation,' Neculaescu wrote.

According to Romania's Foreign Ministry, the head of the Romanian diplomacy underlined the direct implications on democracy, the economy and international security. He highlighted the importance of an approach centred on human control, which ensures the respect of fundamental rights, democratic values and international law, while capitalising on the opportunities offered by new technologies.
'Romania supports the development of effective mechanisms to prevent the misuse of advanced AI systems, given the proliferation of cyber threats and disinformation campaigns, but also the use of Artificial Intelligence in military applications,' the Romanian ministry adds.
Neculaescu voiced Romania's openness to share relevant expertise and experiences in managing these security challenges, especially at the level of thematic groups. He also reaffirmed the readiness of the Romanian side to actively contribute to international efforts to develop common standards in the field.
'A Call for Control of Frontier AI Models' advocates for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.
In fact, according to the Norwegian Government's website, the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Store, and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, sent a joint statement at the end of the online meeting, which was attended by leaders from 31 countries.
'AI is already transforming lives and bringing opportunities. But there was strong agreement in the meeting that governments cannot look away from the warnings about potential risks that come from across the AI ecosystem,' said Prime Minister Store.
For his part, President Stubb pointed out that several countries have come together in the initiative to manage Artificial Intelligence.
Experts from interested states will analyse ways in which the use of Artificial Intelligence should be safer and discuss possible international mechanisms in this regard, the Norwegian Executive's website also shows.
