Parliament - ministerial hearings/Miruta: 49 unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace since start of war in Ukraine
The nominee for Minister of Defense, Radu Miruta stated on Monday that unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace have intensified in 2026 compared to the period since the start of the war in Ukraine.
'Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, there have been 49 unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace, and of these, 30 occurred in 2026. So, while there were 49 over this four-and-a-half-year period, 30 took place in just eight months of this year alone. Clearly, there is an intensification. There have been 148 attacks near Romania's border since the start, with 81 occurring during these months of 2026. Four drones were shot down, three by Romanian Army and the fourth by Spanish pilots currently conducting enhanced air policing missions in Romania,' Miruta stated on Monday during his hearing before the joint parliamentary defense committees.
Miruta noted that the 'drone situation' is being updated on the ministry's website.
