Interim PM Bolojan says results of society's efforts are beginning to become visible

Image

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan says the results of the efforts made by the entire society are beginning to become visible, through a decline in inflation and budget deficit, as well as through the increase of public investments.

The statement comes after the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced that the annual inflation rate fell to 6.2% in August, from 8.2% in July and 10.4% in June.

'The decline would have been even more pronounced if fuel prices had not been under pressure from the external crisis, which is being felt around the world. As this pressure eases, we can expect its effect on prices at the pump to diminish. The budget deficit has fallen significantly. In the first seven months of 2026, it was 37% lower than in the same period last year. At the same time, public investments increased by 15 billion lei,' the interim PM wrote on his Facebook page on Friday.

Bolojan argues that Romania would have reached 'an impossible' situation if it had continued with the model of 'huge' deficits and borrowing at 'burdensome' interest rates.

The interim PM says that Romania is currently paying the 'bill' for previous years, with almost half of the 2026 deficit, or around 3% of GDP, representing interest costs. According to him, the money allocated to interest payments could have been used for investments, including building a motorway every year.

'I said that in the second half of the year, the recovery would begin to produce measurable results. These results are now appearing in the economic data. But I know that, for most Romanians, they are not yet felt enough in everyday life. I know that this period is far from easy. But the alternative would have been much more costly,' Bolojan wrote.

He says the main reform implemented by the Government was the 'restoration' of public finances and a change to an economic model that had become unsustainable.

'The results are beginning to emerge, but the journey is not over. If this direction is abandoned, we risk losing the sacrifices made so far and returning to the problems we started with, in an even more serious form. The essential mission of the future Government is to consolidate the efforts made by society so far and continue along this path, so that Romania's huge potential can be fully capitalized on,' the interim PM conveyed.
