New contingent of Romanian firefighters heads to France to continue wildfire firefighting mission

Image

A new contingent of Romanian firefighters will leave for France on Wednesday to continue the wildfire firefighting mission.

'The third rotation of the national module specialised in forest firefighting is heading to the French Republic in order to continue Romania's mission under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The decision to extend the mission was adopted by the National Committee for Emergency Situations (CNSU) on 27 July, following a request submitted by the French authorities through the activation of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism,' the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) Press Office informed.

Thus, Romania extended its participation in the mission to support efforts to extinguish wildfires and forest fires in France by a further two weeks.

The personnel rotation will take place on 1 August, when the new contingent of 40 Romanian firefighters will take over operational duties from the colleagues currently deployed on the ground.

'The Romanian module's firefighting equipment is already deployed in France, in the Var Department, and is being used in operational activities. Accordingly, the new contingent will take over the fire trucks, equipment and assigned missions at the operational base, ensuring continuity of operations without disrupting the operational capacity,' the quoted source said.

Romanian firefighters will remain ready to respond until mid-August, at the request of the French authorities, to help contain and extinguish vegetation and forest fires alongside the other European teams taking part in the mission.

'Through this new personnel rotation, Romania reaffirms its commitment to European solidarity and international cooperation in the area of civil protection, contributing to strengthening the joint response capacity during periods of high wildfire risk,' the IGSU mentioned.

The mission is being carried out under the coordination of the Department for Emergency Situations, through the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations, as part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
