The Port of Constanta can become the entry point for natural gas from Turkmenistan to Europe, by connecting with the transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan and Georgia and, subsequently, through the BRUA pipeline, considers the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR), Mihai Daraban, who met on Wednesday with Annamammet Annayev, the ambassador of the Republic of Turkmenistan in Bucharest.

'The Port of Constanta can become the entry point for natural gas from Turkmenistan to Europe, by connecting with the transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan and Georgia and, subsequently, through the BRUA pipeline. Such a project would represent a real accelerator of cooperation between the business environments of the two countries. However, a core business capable of coalescing around it the companies from the economic sectors of the two countries is needed, and the energy sector remains, in the current European context, one of the most relevant starting points,' said Mihai Daraban, according to a CCIR press release.

The discussions aimed to identify new opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation, with an emphasis on the energy sector and port-to-port cooperation between Constanta and Turkmenbashi.

The CCIR president relaunched the idea of resuming the AGRI project, which could ensure access to the European market for volumes of natural gas from the Caspian region, starting with Turkmenistan, a country that has already built a gas pipeline reaching the Caspian Sea.

During the discussions, Ambassador Annamammet Annayev made a presentation of the economic opportunities in Turkmenistan, highlighting a 6.3% increase in Gross Domestic Product in the first half of 2026 and his country's position, ranked 4th in the world in terms of certified natural gas reserves.

'Turkmenistan has significant energy resources and an economy with a solid growth rate. The port-to-port cooperation between Turkmenbashi and Constanta, along with the project of a regional distribution center for Turkmen products in the Port of Constanta, can become a strategic pillar of the economic relationship between the two countries,' the ambassador said.
