President Dan: Ankara NATO Summit Declaration - proof we have delivered on our commitments on defence spending
AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday that the NATO Summit Declaration adopted in Ankara is proof that the Allies have respected their commitments on defence spending.
'The Declaration we have adopted today at the NATO Summit is proof that we have delivered on our commitments in spending, capabilities and solidarity, because we understand what is at stake when deterrence fails. A more fair distribution of responsibility within the Alliance will strengthen the Transatlantic Bond for decades ahead. We also showed our determination to further support Ukraine and to further adapt NATO to growing hybrid threats,' the Romanian president wrote on X.
In another message on the same platform, Nicusor Dan stated: 'As I depart NATO's successful Summit in Ankara, I want to note how Romania is among NATO's most forward-leaning allies on defense burden-sharing to individual Allies. Romania's early and decisive undertaking of the defense commitment Allies agreed at The Hague underscores the essential role Romania plays on NATO's Eastern Flank. Thank you, Donald Trump
- we are happy to stand with you and the USA.'
NATO member states reaffirmed on Wednesday, in the Ankara Summit Declaration, their firm commitment to the collective-defence clause in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
'We, the Heads of State and Government of the North Atlantic Alliance, have gathered in Ankara to reaffirm our ironclad commitment to our collective defence under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty and to the transatlantic bond. An attack on one is an attack on all. Our unity, solidarity and collective strength remain the foundation of peace, security, and prosperity for the one billion citizens in our Alliance of free and democratic nations. We remain committed to our 360-degree approach to deterrence and defence,' the summit's final document reads. AGERPRES (RO - editing by: Andreea Rotaru; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
