Crown Custodian Margareta says a royal title must be used solely for country service
Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, declared on Thursday at the 'Nicolae Balcescu' Land Forces Academy in Sibiu, that a royal title must be used solely in the service of the country, recalling the life lessons she received from her father, King Mihai I of Romania.
'He lived only for his country and for service, just as King Charles does now. He is there for service and for nothing else. This is what he taught me, and I hope I can carry it forward. I wanted you to know this,' the Custodian of the Crown said.
Her Majesty also spoke about King Mihai's profound attachment to Romania, even during the years of exile.
'It is important today to know that he survived difficult moments through faith - it was very important to him - and through love of country. As a child, I did not understand what it meant; every day he spoke about Romania, he spoke about the beauty of Romania,' she said.
Margareta recalled being deeply moved by the King's first return to the country.
'In fact, when he came back here for the first time, he cried in secret, but I was very affected. I understood that a circle had closed,' Her Majesty said.
She added that King Mihai learned modesty from his mother, Queen Helen of Romania.
Her Majesty Margareta and His Royal Highness Prince Radu paid an official visit on Thursday to the Land Forces Academy in Sibiu, where they met with the leadership, faculty, military staff and students.
The Royal Family's presence in Sibiu is part of the events marking 160 years since the arrival in Romania of Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, a moment that marks the beginning of the Romanian Royal Dynasty and a key stage in the consolidation of the modern Romanian state.
The visit also holds special significance for Sibiu city's military academic community. The history of the 'Nicolae Balcescu' Land Forces Academy is tied to the tradition of Romanian military education and to the name of Prince Carol. By High Decree No. 2198/1932, the Infantry Military School No. 1 in Bucharest was merged with the Infantry Military School No. 2 in Sibiu, the new institution taking the name 'Prince Carol' Infantry Officers' School. From 1932 onward, the Sibiu military school remained Romania's only institution dedicated to training infantry officers.
