Budget deficit falls to 1.17pct of GDP four months into 2026
The budget deficit fell in the first four months of this year by 1.75 percentage points compared with the same period last year, reaching 1.17% of the GDP, compared with 2.92% of the GDP in the January-April 2025 period, according to data the Finance Ministry (MF) published on Tuesday.
'The execution of the consolidated general budget in the first four months of 2026 ended with a significantly reduced deficit of 23.95 billion lei, representing 1.17% of the GDP, compared with the deficit of 55.97 billion lei (2.92% of the GDP) recorded in the same period of 2025. Thus, the budget deficit decreased more than 32 billion lei compared with the same period last year, namely by 1.75 percentage points as GDP share, marking one of the most significant budget adjustments in recent years,' the Finance Ministry informed in a press release sent to AGERPRES.
Total revenues amounted to 223.83 billion lei in the first four months of 2026, up 12% year-on-year. Expressed as a share of the GDP, total revenues increased 0.5 percentage points, driven mainly by current revenues including VAT, wage and income tax and social insurance contributions.
According to the Finance Ministry, total expenditure amounting to 247.79 billion lei went down in nominal terms by 3.2% compared with the same period of the previous year. Expressed as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product, expenditure in the first four months of 2026 recorded a decrease of 1.24 percentage points compared with the same period in 2025, from 13.4% of the GDP to 12.1% of the GDP.
