Hantavirus infection case in Arad, confirmed; patient is stable, conscious and cooperative

Image

The case of hantavirus infection in Arad was confirmed following the analysis of biological samples carried out by the 'Cantacuzino' National Institute for Medical-Military Research and Development, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) informed on Monday. According to the institution, the patient is stable, conscious and cooperative.

'Following the analysis of biological samples carried out by the 'Cantacuzino' National Institute for Medical-Military Research and Development, the case was confirmed as a hantavirus infection involving strains circulating in Romania and Europe,' the quoted source informed.

According to INSP, the case has no connection with the outbreak identified on board the cruise ship involving the Andes virus (Hantavirus), which circulates only in South America.

On Friday evening, the National Institute of Public Health issued clarifications regarding the patient whose PCR test returned positive for hantavirus at Arad County Hospital, showing that an epidemiological investigation is under way and that the patient had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital within the past three years.

Earlier, sources from the Arad County Emergency Clinical Hospital (SCJU) told AGERPRES that the patient had been admitted to the local unit on 8 May with a feverish condition and had not travelled abroad in the past three years.
