INSP says hantavirus suspicion under review as epidemiological investigation continues
Romania's National Institute of Public Health (INSP) issued clarifications on Friday evening regarding the case of a patient whose PCR test at Arad County Hospital returned positive for hantavirus, noting that an epidemiological investigation is under way and that the patient has been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility for the past three years.
'A suspected case of hantavirus infection has been reported and is currently under epidemiological and clinical investigation. The patient has been admitted to a psychiatric unit since July 2023, with no known contact with sick or suspected individuals. Biological samples have been collected and sent to the Cantacuzino Institute for confirmation or exclusion of the diagnosis. Until laboratory results are received, the case remains classified as a suspicion,' INSP said.
Earlier, sources at Arad County Emergency Clinical Hospital told AGERPRES that the patient was admitted on May 8 with fever and had not traveled outside Romania in the past three years.
The PCR test result arrived on Friday and was positive for hantavirus, though specialists still need to determine the specific strain.
