President Nicusor Dan: Romania's prosperity, security depend on strong, prosperous European Union
AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday, in a Facebook message ahead of a working dinner held in the context of the informal European Council meeting in Cyprus, that Romania's prosperity and security depend on a strong and prosperous European Union.
The head of state underlined that one of Romania's key priorities on the agenda is the future EU budget. 'We want it to be an ambitious, sizeable budget,' he said, adding that funds earmarked for competitiveness should also be accessible to companies in less developed member states.
Nicusor Dan also highlighted the importance of cohesion funds.
'Cohesion has been and must remain an important pillar of the Union. It is an indispensable ingredient of our shared solidarity. At the same time, the Union must invest resources in competitiveness and security, in ensuring a strong Common Agricultural Policy, as well as in connectivity and innovation, with a particular focus on our immediate neighbourhood. This means that we need a Union budget commensurate with our political ambitions, which must be high,' the president also wrote on Facebook.
He reiterated that Romania can enjoy prosperity and security only within a prosperous and strong Union.
'In practical terms, this means identifying new resources to underpin the future EU budget, bearing in mind that these new resources ultimately return as tangible investments in the member states. It is important to understand that the European Union, while maintaining cohesion as a central pillar, must have sufficient own resources to achieve the objectives we set for it,' the head of state concluded.
Nicusor Dan said that the 'One Europe, One Market' Roadmap will be presented and signed at this informal European Council meeting.
The informal Council will continue on Friday in Nicosia in a format that also includes regional partners. The president's delegation includes presidential advisers Valentin Naumescu and Diana Iancu, as well as Romania's Permanent Representative to the EU, Iulia Matei.
