National Museum of Bucovina to host Stefan Luchian painting exhibition as first
An exhibition featuring works by painter Stefan Luchian will open, for the first time, at the National Museum of Bucovina, marking 110 years since the death of the great artist, according to a museum press release issued on Tuesday.
According to the source, the opening will take place on 22 April at 13:00 at the headquarters of the National Museum of Bucovina and will be presented by Damian Florea, gallerist, curator and art collector.
'On 27 June 1916, Stefan Luchian, one of the most important figures in Romanian visual arts, passed away. After 110 years, the National Museum of Bucovina, in collaboration with prestigious museum institutions and associations in the country - the National Museum of Art of Romania, the ‘Moldova' National Museum Complex in Iasi, the Brukenthal National Museum, the ‘Ion Ionescu-Quintus' Prahova County Museum of Art, the ‘Jean Louis Calderon' Foundation - the ‘Cornel Florea' Galleries and the Foundation for Art, Nature and Society - is offering the city of Suceava an event: ‘Stefan Luchian - a universal artist.' The exhibition is the first of this kind organised in Suceava, at least in the past 50 years,' the National Museum of Bucovina said.
The exhibition brings together 42 works created using different techniques and on various media, covering a large part of Stefan Luchian's oeuvre - flowers, landscapes, portraits and still life - all aiming to present to the public the universal dimension of one of the most important Romanian painters from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A remarkable representative of modern Romanian art, Stefan Luchian is regarded as a successor of the tradition established by Nicolae Grigorescu and Ion Andreescu. His refined and deeply expressive art conveys a warm humanism and a distinct sensitivity, defining him as one of the most valuable Romanian painters of his time. Through the body of work he left to posterity, he profoundly influenced Romanian painting at the beginning of the 20th century and beyond.
