Romania to line up nine boxers for World Cup in Brazil

Image

Romania is lining up six male and three female boxers for the World Boxing Cup that will take place between April 20-26 in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil.

According to the Romanian Boxing Federation (FRB), coordinating coach of the men's team, George Pertea, said that he will also rely on the components of the current team in the qualifications for the next edition of the Olympic Games, plus Luis Mayeta, a recently naturalised Cuban.

'We are going to Brazil with a young team that we will also rely on in the qualifiers for the Olympic Games. I hope the papers for the Cuban Mayeta will come out soon and we will be able to test him in the big competitions,' Pertea said.

In his turn, the coach of the women's team, Constantin Galbenuse, said that he chose three young athletes as he cannot rely on Lacramioara Perijoc and Claudia Nechita.

'In the absence of the two medal winning athletes of the squad, Lacramioara Perijoc and Claudia Nechita, we decided to go to Brazil with three young athletes, who have proven that they have value and are part of our plan for the 2028 Olympics,' said Galbenuse.

Romania's line-up for the 2026 Boxing World Cup in Brazil is as follows:

Men's bouts: Daniel Florin Girleanu ( 55 kg), Andrei Valentin Gavae (60 kg), Arun Nicu Tudoroiu (65 kg), Daniel Adrian Grigore (70 kg), Marian Alexandru Buleu (75 kg) and Florin Ionita (90+ kg). Coaches: George Pertea, Marian Pita and Alexi Pardo Salazar.

Women's bouts: Mihaela Costina Badescu (51 kg), Crinuta Andra Sebe (65 kg) and Amalia Nita ( 70 kg). Coaches: Constantin Galbenuse and Luminita Turcin. AGERPRES (RO - editing by: Marius Tone; EN - writing by: Corneliu-Aurelian Colceriu)
