USR, on appointments of chief prosecutors:Should have been accompanied by process that would inspire trust, transparency

Image

The Save Romania Union (USR) believes that the appointments to the heads of the major prosecutor's offices should have been accompanied by a process that 'unequivocally inspires trust and transparency' and claims that these 'have the PSD mark' on them.

USR reacted on Wednesday evening to President Nicusor Dan's announcement regarding the appointments of chief prosecutors.

'We share the president's desire to boost the activity of prosecutors' offices, especially regarding major corruption and tax evasion cases. People must start to have more trust in justice, and trust begins with the way it is run. That is why we believe that these appointments should have been accompanied by a process that would unequivocally inspire trust and transparency. We disagree with the president's opinion that these appointments do not have the PSD mark on them. A process is only as trustworthy as the people who run it. Mr. Marinescu, PSD minister, led a flawed process that did not inspire trust in many honest prosecutors in the system,' USR said in a Facebook post.

According to USR, civil society's concerns are real.

'The warnings came from honest prosecutors from within the system. They came from the Supreme Court. They came from anti-corruption NGOs. They came from people who protested in the markets at key moments in the last decades and stood for an independent judiciary. The president promised that after six months the results would begin to be seen. Now it is the responsibility of the newly appointed to refute all criticisms with deeds, to live up to the expectations that Romanians have of the judiciary. USR will remain on the barricades in defense of a justice system oriented towards citizens, not towards the privileged,' the USR message also states.

President Nicusor Dan announced on Wednesday that he had signed the decrees for the appointment of the heads of the major prosecutor's offices.

The proposals had been submitted to the head of state on Tuesday by the Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu.

President Nicusor Dan stated that the proposals for the heads of the major prosecutor's offices do not belong to the PSD and that he formed his own opinion about the candidates following discussions with dozens of prosecutors.AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Georgiana Tanasescu, editing by: Marius Fratila; EN - writing by: Catalin Cristian Trandafir)
