Romania's gas production falls 1.1% in January 2026; imports up 116.3%
Romania's usable natural gas production in January 2026 reached 654,400 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), 7,300 toe below the level in the same month last year (-1.1 percent), according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data.
On the other hand, in January 2026, natural gas imports rose by 116.3 percent (+183,400 toe) compared with the same period last year, reaching 341,100 toe.
According to estimates of the National Strategy and Prognosis Commission (CNSP), natural gas production is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7 percent until 2027. The latest Energy Balance Forecast anticipates production of 7.907 million toe in 2026 (up 1.5 percent) and 8.176 million toe in 2027 (up 3.4 percent).
In terms of imports, a downward trend is expected, with a sharper decline projected by 2027 (-6 percent), in line with rising domestic production due to the commissioning of new capacities, while also taking into account continued transit to external markets.
The CNSP estimates natural gas imports of 2.150 million toe in 2026 (-2.7 percent) and 2.022 million toe in 2027 (-6 percent). AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Nicoleta Gherasi; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
