U.S. military equippment, troops expected to be deployed to Romania for up to 90 days

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

The deployment of military equipment and troops from the United States of America to Romania is expected to take place for a period of up to 90 days, official sources stated following the meeting of the Supreme Council for Country Defence (CSAT) on Wednesday.

The issue was discussed during Wednesday's CSAT meeting in the context of the crisis in the Middle East, and the request has been sent to the Parliament of Romania for approval.

American military equipment and troops are expected to be deployed at the bases in Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base and Campia Turzii Air Base. Approximately 400-500 troops are involved.

If the conflict continues for a longer period, maintaining the presence of these troops and equipment would require a new agreement from Romania.

The request for the 90-day deployment was made by the United States of America.

At Campia Turzii, observation and intelligence-gathering systems (drones) will be deployed, along with refuelling equipment that cannot be hosted at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base.

The CSAT discussed the temporary deployment of American military equipment and troops in Romania during Wednesday's meeting, in the context of the Middle East crisis, with the request being forwarded to Parliament for approval.

'The third item discussed today in the CSAT was the temporary deployment of certain American military equipment and troops in Romania. These include air-to-air refuelling aircraft, monitoring equipment and satellite communications equipment, the latter being linked to the missile defence system at Deveselu Military Base. I emphasise that these are defensive systems and that they are not equipped with weaponry; in technical terms they are referred to as non-kinetic equipment.

They will be deployed - provided Parliament approves in the session scheduled to take place today - under the Partnership Agreement between Romania and the United States of America. As I mentioned, for these troops and equipment to arrive in Romania, a vote in Parliament is required. Following the CSAT meeting, we sent a letter to Parliament and a debate will take place this afternoon,' President Nicusor Dan informed in a press statement delivered at Cotroceni Palace after the CSAT meeting.

He explained that this cooperation with the United States is similar to arrangements that other NATO countries currently have.

The head of state assured citizens that these systems increase Romania's security.

'I assure Romanians that they have no reason to worry; their country is a safe country-indeed, an even safer one,' Nicusor Dan said. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Irinela Visan; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
