Romania's current fuel reserves can cover five months' worth of demand in case of severe dearth
Romania has fuel reserves that can cover its domestic demand for the next five months, in the hypothetical and excluded situation in which not a litre of diesel or gasoline would any longer be refined or imported, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan said on Thursday at a press briefing following a government meeting.
'As we speak, thousands of litres of diesel and gasoline are consumed in this country that which must be replaced. We have strategic reserves of about 2 million tonnes of fuel, we have technical reserves of about 1.2 million tonnes, which, in the hypothetical situation and totally excluded of not refining a litre of oil in Romania or not importing a litre of product - diesel or gasoline - can cover Romania's demand for the next five months. But we have to take every molecule of fuel we need for Romania and for Romania's economy now at much higher prices, for example, on Friday we had quotations of USD 750 dollars per thousand litres of diesel, today it is USD 1,100. It is obvious that we buy at USD 1,100 and, as I have shown extremely explicitly, because the Romanian state has done its job, we have the smallest increase in the price of fuel in the European Union compared to other states,' Ivan said.
In addition, the fact that prices at the pump have not increased much is also due to the fact that the institutions empowered to carry out controls have done their job.
'We have institutions that are empowered to take such steps, they have already done them, as proof that Romania is the country that has had the smallest increases in fuel pump prices compared to other states in Europe. We did this in anticipation, we did not react post-factum, which would lead to a situation in which Romanians would be more protected by the state and the government than in other states of the European Union,' he said.
