Romanian Ana Barbosu crowned 2025 European Female Gymnast of the Year
Ana Barbosu, one of Romania's leading artistic gymnasts, has been voted Europe's Best Female Gymnast of 2025 in the annual poll conducted by European Gymnastics, the continent's governing body.
Barbosu topped the women's category with 29,694 votes (64%), followed by Ukrainian Taisiia Onofriichuk (rhythmic gymnastics) - 11,559 votes (25%), Spain's Melania Rodriguez (trampoline gymnastics) - 2,017 votes (4%), Belgian Nina Derwael (artistic gymnastics) - 1,715 votes (4%), and German Darja Varfolomeev (rhythmic gymnastics) - 1,653 votes (4%)
At the 2024 European Championships in Leipzig, Barbosu claimed four medals: gold on floor, silver on beam, bronze in the all-around, bronze on uneven bars. Her consistent results have positioned her among Europe's most decorated gymnasts.
In the category 'Male Gymnast of the Year', pommel horse sensation Hamlet Manukyan of Armenia triumphed with a total of 1,030,759 votes (51%).
In the category 'Team of the Year', the Welsch Master Team of Switzerland narrowly won with 72,172 votes, while in the category 'Outstanding Performance', the the Portuguese Aerobics group claimed the victory with 11,205 votes.
Tumbling superstar Mike Barnes (UK) was named 'Coach of the Year' with 309,280 votes.
Regarding Ana Barbosu's Olympic medal case, in early February, the Swiss Federal Tribunal ruled that the dispute over the 2024 Paris Olympic floor exercise bronze medal must be reviewed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which had previously awarded the bronze to Barbosu.
The Romanian originally finished third in the floor final, but dropped to fourth after the U.S. delegation successfully appealed the score of Jordan Chiles, who moved from fifth to third. Romania challenged the decision, and CAS later ruled that the U.S. appeal was filed after the one-minute deadline, meaning Chiles' upgraded score should not have been accepted.
