New U.S. Ambassador to Romania Nirenberg presents his letters of credence

The new Ambassador of the United States of America to Bucharest, Darryl Nirenberg, on Tuesday presented his letters of credence to President Nicusor Dan, during a ceremony held at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.

Following the official ceremony, the Ambassador, accompanied by his wife and officials from the U.S. diplomatic mission in Bucharest, held talks with the President.

On November 19, during his hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Darryl Nirenberg stated that relations with Romania had never been more important.

"Romania occupies a strategic position bordering Ukraine, and on the Black Sea. (...) And, Romania has great potential when it comes to energy and critical mineral resources. American firms are participating in the development of these resources - which will help reduce Europe's dependence on Russia," he said.

"If confirmed, I commit to advance President Trump's America First Agenda and work to make America stronger, safer and more prosperous. I will strengthen ties with Romania, support our military partnership, and promote and defend American's economic and security interests," Nirenberg said at the hearing.

He underscored that his nomination as Ambassador to Romania is 'deeply meaningful', as his grandparents had emigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe, and he himself, while working for the committee before which he was heard, witnessed history unfold when the Berlin Wall fell and the Romanian people gained their freedom from communism.

"Should I be confirmed, this assignment would bring things full circle for me," the Ambassador said.

Darryl Nirenberg was nominated in May 2025 as United States Ambassador to Romania by President Donald Trump. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
