Radu Turcanu brings Romania's first point in Davis Cup tie against Paraguay

Tennis player Radu David Turcanu edged past Alex Santino Nunez Vera, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7/2), on Friday, in the first singles match of the tie between Romania and Paraguay, at the Club Internacionl de tenis in Asuncion, in the Davis Cup World Group I play-off.

Turcanu (aged 19, ATP's 677th) needed two hours and 37 minutes to defeat the Paraguayan (aged 18, ATP's 1,800th).

The Romanian national dominated the first set, which he claimed with a clear 6-1, but then lost the second 3-6. In the decider, the two stayed level until the tiebreak, where Turcanu made the difference (7-2). It is worth noting that Nunez Vera served for the match at 6-5.

In the second singles match, Gabriel Ghetu (aged 18, ATP's 714th) was defeated by Daniel Vallejo (aged 21, ATP's 104th), with a score of 6-1, 6-4.

Thus, Romania and Paraguay teams are level, 1-1, in the tie taking place at the Club Internacionl de tenis, Asuncion, Paraguay.

Saturday will begin with the doubles match between the pairs made up of Mircea-Alexandru Jecan/Bogdan Pavel and Daniel Vallejo/Martin Antonio Vergara del Puerto (21:00), with the final two singles matches scheduled between Vallejo and Turcanu, namely between Ghetu and Alex Santino Nunez Vera, all first-time encounters.

Romania's team includes players Stefan Palosi (ATP's 445th), Gabriel Ghetu (ATP's 714th), Radu Turcanu (ATP's 667th), Bogdan Pavel (ATP's 131st in doubles) and Alexandru Jecan (ATP's 127th in doubles).

Romania come after a 3-1 victory over El Salvador, achieved in Santa Tecla, while Paraguay qualified for this play-off following a 3-1 win against Pakistan, in Asuncion. In the Davis Cup rankings, Romania is ranked 40th, while Paraguay sit in 65th position. The tie is a first, the two national teams having never met before in an official competition.
