PM Bolojan:Union of the Romanian Principalities, made possible through decisions assumed by leaders who acted responsibly
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Saturday that the Union of Wallachia with Moldavia on 24 January 1859 represented a moment that opened the path to modern Romania, bringing to mind with gratitude those who had the vision and courage to take this step.
'Today we mark the Union of Wallachia with Moldavia, achieved on 24 January 1859, a moment that opened the path to modern Romania. We express our gratitude to those who had the vision and courage to take this step. The Union of the Romanian Principalities was made possible through decisions assumed by leaders who acted responsibly and with the future in mind. It was prepared by a generation of intellectuals educated at Europe's major universities, connected to the ideas of liberalism, the rule of law and institutional modernisation. Returning home, they understood that progress is not built through improvisation but through clear laws and functional institutions,' Prime Minister Bolojan underlined in a message conveyed on the occasion of 24 January celebrations.
According to the Prime Minister, the rule of Alexandru Ioan Cuza marked the beginning of the construction of the modern Romanian state.
'Within a short period, the foundations were laid for public administration, the education system, the modern justice system and a unified fiscal state. The reforms were ambitious and aimed to create a functional state. Looking back to 1859, we understand that reforms are necessary and that they must be supported by responsibility, transparency and respect for rules. This is also our responsibility today. Romania needs a state that functions, respects its citizens and uses available resources responsibly, based on credible and efficient institutions,' he stressed.
On Saturday, the Prime Minister attended the the military and religious ceremony organised on the occasion of the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, at the monument to ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza on Dealul Patriarhiei Promenade.
