The documentary exhibition called 'Retrospective of the year 1989', marking 36 years since the fall of Romania's communist regime, will be inaugurated by the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) on 8 December at the 'Ovidius' University of Constanta.

According to a CNSAS release sent on Friday, the event, organised in partnership with the University's Faculty of History and Political Science and the Constanta History and Archaeology Museum, will begin at 12:00 in the Senate Hall.

The exhibition, organised with the support of AGERPRES National News Agency, will be open until 19 December and offers students, academic staff and the general public an important opportunity to reflect on the recent past and the price of freedom.

'The exhibition presents the academic public a visual and documentary journey through the events of 1989 - a turning point in the history of Romania and Europe. The 12 thematic panels, organised chronologically month by month, reconstruct the social, political and institutional context that preceded the Revolution in December, capturing both the key moments of that year and the atmosphere of a period marked by profound transformation,' the release states.

According to the same source, the final point of the exhibition is dedicated to the Revolution of December 1989, highlighting the courage, sacrifice and hope of those who contributed to the fall of the dictatorship and the beginning of a new era for Romania. The documents selected from the archives of the former Securitate, some of them presented for the first time, offer visitors a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of the totalitarian state, the social tensions and the dynamics of change that led to the end of the communist regime.

At the opening of the exhibition, various speakers will deliver messages, including the Dean of the Faculty of History and Political Science at the 'Ovidius' University, Associate Professor Daniel Citiriga, the Manager of the Constanta History and Archaeology Museum, Delia Cornea, PhD, Laura Cornea, PhD, a member of the CNSAS College and Silviu B. Moldovan, PhD, Director of the Research, Exhibitions and Publications Directorate of the CNSAS.

'Through this initiative, the CNSAS reaffirms its mission to facilitate public access to documents relevant to understanding the recent past and to foster academic dialogue on the memory of communism and the democratic transition,' the release mentioned.
