Tennis: Jaqueline Cristian qualifies for the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Osaka
Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian qualified, on Tuesday, for the round of 16 of the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka (Japan), equipped with total prizes amounting to 275,094 US dollars, after defeating Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).
Jaqueline Cristian (27 years old, 47 WTA) sealed her victory after almost two hours of playing (1 h 53 min), with this being her first meeting with the Italian (24 years old, 91 WTA).
The Romanian dominated the first set, 6-2, and in the second act she led 3-0, before being equalized, 3-3. Cristian missed a match point at 5-4, but managed to tip the balance in the tiebreak.
Jaqueline Cristian won a cheque of 4,160 US dollars and 30 WTA points for reaching this far in the competition, and in the second round she will face the winner of the match between Katie Volynets (USA) and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (Spain/seed no. 8).
Also on Wednesday, Cristian will play in the doubles event, in the first round, alongside Serbian Olga Danilovic, against the pair Nao Hibino (Japan)/Katarzyna Piter (Poland). Gabriela Ruse and the American Ashlyn Krueger will also play in the doubles, against the pair Ana Blinkova (Russia)/Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy).
