Electrica releases EUR 500 ml corporate green bond issue, Romania's largest so far
Leading energy company Electrica is putting out the largest corporate green bond issue in Romania (non-financial), worth 500 million euros, which will be listed on the Luxembourg and the Bucharest stock exchanges, the company said in a release.
The 5-year senior green bonds carry an interest rate of 4.566% and have been rated BBB- by Fitch.
In early August, the bonds will be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and subsequently on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, with a standard institutional face value of 100,000 euros. Luxembourg's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier approved the offering prospectus on July 10, 2025.
The funds raised through this issue will be allocated to the development of renewable electricity production and energy storage capacities, in accordance with Electrica's Green Financing Framework. The goal for 2030, set forth in its corporate strategy, is to implement 1,000 MW of electricity production capacity and 900 MWh of electricity storage capacity.
'This inaugural green bond issuance marks a significant milestone for Electrica and for the national energy system. The success of this operation reflects our corporate discipline, transparency and capacity for rapid execution and also sends a strong signal to the international financial market regarding Romania's potential in sustainable financing. The participation of the European Investment Bank confirms our strategic alignment with the European decarbonization and digitalization goals, and provides us with a solid basis for speeding up investments in the energy infrastructure of the future. Moreover, Electrica benefits from a solid partnership with the European Investment Bank, which finances the development of strategic energy projects,' said Electrica's CEO Alexandru Chirita.
Electrica was assisted in this transaction by Banca Comerciala Română, BNP PARIBAS, CITI, ING, J.P. Morgan and Raiffeisen Bank International as Joint Global Coordinators, and BT Capital Partners, IMI-Intesa Sanpaolo, Societe Generale and UniCredit as Joint Bookrunners.
Electrica Group is a key player in Romania's electricity distribution, supply and production market, as well as one of the most important energy service providers in the country.
The Group provides services to approximately 4 million users, covering 18 counties in three geographical areas as far as electricity distribution is concerned (Northern Transylvania, Southern Transylvania and Northern Muntenia), and operating nationwide for electricity supply and energy maintenance and services.
Electrica, the group's holding company with a majority of private capital, has been listed on the Bucharest and London stock exchanges since July 2014. It is the only listed Romanian company that operates in an integrated manner in the fields of electricity distribution, supply and production.
