European energy market is single just on paper, cross-border connectivity infrastructure needed (minister)
The European energy market needs cross-border connectivity infrastructure - border-crossing 'wires' to carry free-flowing energy so that prices in member states are truly similar, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said on Tuesday.
'Why is the day-ahead electricity spot price 84 euros in Romania, 25 euros in France and 60 euros in Austria? Because the European energy market is single just on paper,' Burduja wrote on Facebook, noting that 'on most days, energy is much cheaper in the West, produced in nuclear power plants, but it cannot physically reach us, Bulgarians, Greeks a.s.o. I have explained these aspects for everyone to understand and I will continue, in the coming days, to detail the causes of energy prices in Romania and the region.'
'As far as interconnectivity is concerned, I have repeatedly asked in Brussels for everyone to share equal obligations and rights. It is a matter of normality within the joint European project, which has started as a coal and steel union,' the minister continued.
According to him, 'Romania was, is and will stay a good European citizen', already sharing electricity grid interconnections of 4,000 MW with all its neighbors. Also, transmission system operator Transelectrica's plan is to reach over 7,000 MW in the next 5 years.
Burduja remarked that there are no interconnections at all between Austria and Slovakia, whereas the interconnection capacity between Austria and Hungary 'could easily be doubled, but there has been no desire to do so for many years.'
The Romanian minister concludes that 'following Brussels' efforts over the past year, the development of interconnections and the improvement of the functioning of the European energy market have become first-rank priorities for the European Commission, through the voice of EC President Ursula von der Leyen and of Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen.
