Nicusor Dan: I respect decisions of treaties; we want to continue good relationship with Israel

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

President-elect Nicusor Dan declared on Thursday that his duty is to respect the treaties agreed upon by Romania, noting at the same time that Romania wishes to continue the 'very good' relationship with the State of Israel.

Nicusor Dan was asked whether he considers Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu guilty of war crimes.

'That's none of my business. My business is to respect some decisions of treaties, courts, in this case, which we are part of. Beyond that, we want to continue the very good relationship we have with the Jewish state,' the president-elect replied in a press statement.

Nicusor Dan thanked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday for his congratulations on winning the elections, assuring him of his commitment to strengthening relations between Romania and Israel.

'I genuinely appreciate your message and deeply value the historical friendship between Romania and Israel. I assure you of my commitment to strengthening the relationship between our nations, which are united by shared cultural ties and a strong dedication to effective cooperation in areas such as technology, education, culture and preservation of historical memory,' Nicusor Dan wrote on the X network on Thursday.

On May 8, during an electoral debate, Nicusor Dan stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not pay a visit to Romania. He added that Romania must have 'a normal relationship' with Israel.

'It will never happen as long as this decision [the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court] exists, namely for Prime Minister Netanyahu to come to Romania,' he said at the time. AGERPRES(RO - writing by: Irinela Visan; EN - writing by: Bogdan Gabaroi)
