Daffodil Festival in Salasu de Sus, at the foot of Retezat Mountains

Thousands of wild daffodils bloomed in a clearing located at the foot of the Retezat Massif, in Salasu de Sus commune, tourists being invited on Saturday and Sunday to take part in the events organized by the local authorities, on the occasion of a new edition of the "Daffodil Festival."
The festival is organized annually, around the Feast of Saints Constantine and Helena, in order to highlight the tourist potential of the area, as Salasu de Sus commune has received, this year, the status of tourist resort of local interest.
"There are thousands of daffodils which bloomed in the Daffodil Glade. Basically, the clearing is all white. We invite everyone to this celebration of the commune, to see the daffodils in their natural environment, but not to tear them away because it is a shame to destroy them," Salasu de Sus mayor Ioan Vlad told AGERPRES on Friday.
The events included in the "Daffodil Festival" programme begin on Saturday, at 10:00hrs, with a series of workshops dedicated to children, with games and sports competitions which will take place at Salasu de Sus Secondary School and in the Daffodil Glade.
On Sunday, as of 16:00hrs, in the village of Salasu de Sus, there will be a folklore show which will bring together local artists, but also established Romanian folklore singers.
The Daffodil Glade is located between the villages of Salasu de Sus and Nucsoara and covers an area of about 20 hectares.
The access to this tourist objective can be done by car, on a paved road, starting from Salasu de Sus, from National Road (DN) 66 Simeria-Petrosani.
The locals say that the first daffodils were brought to Salasu de Sus by a Dutchman in 1900. The flowers adapted to the environmental conditions and were appreciated by the locals, who protected them for their special fragrance and shape.
Over time, the daffodils have extended their range in the wild, near the entrance gate to the Retezat National Park, the clearing being now declared a natural reservation. Wild daffodils are smaller than the usual ones and are already integrated into the spontaneous flora of the Retezat Mountains.
