'Distinguished audience,
The topics we address today are extremely relevant in the current challenging international context.
Each time I discuss about the next generations and the modalities to face the perils of a radicalized world, there is one answer I am particularly attached to - Education.
Because education is information. It is awareness and critical thinking. It is prevention.
The focus of our discussion - Holocaust distortion - falls within our concerns and stands out as an example for which education makes the difference.
From a national standpoint, Romania has an extensive experience on research, education and remembrance.
I can only underline once more the whole-of-society effort and the importance of the Government's active endeavors to this aim.
Romania's role as a regional model in countering Antisemitism, preserving the memory of the Holocaust and of its victims is well acknowledged.
We are ready to share our experience and particularly with our partnering experts from Eastern and Central Europe.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry has wholeheartedly supported these efforts and we will continue to do so! The national Strategy for combatting Antisemitism, recently updated, is a case in point.
In this vein, we are pleased to host in Bucharest this event, aiming to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on Holocaust education.
Nowadays, when online content spreads fast, incredibly fast, with a powerful influence, we need to carefully look into the challenges and the opportunities it entails.
As regards traditional education, Romania is proud to showcase a unique best-practice example.
Starting with school year 2023-2024, the 'History of the Jews. The Holocaust' is taught as a separate compulsory subject, part of the main curricula, to 11th and 12th grade pupils. Over 7,000 pupils have studied this subject last year in high schools.
It was not an easy journey, but the results are there. And I am really proud that also our colleagues from the Foreign Ministry have contributed to this important step. Of course, there is a lot of work, but it's also important to acknowledge the results we achieved in this field.
And I take this opportunity to congratulate the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania, to congratulate you, President, for your relentless efforts in promoting these initiatives.
Ladies and Gentlemen, dear colleagues,
Our commitment to encouraging the research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust has been and will be steadfast.
Antisemitism continues to pervade the public sphere. It increases people's likelihood of being faced with abuse, expressed in different forms, online and offline.
Against this already grim background, the 7th of October events and their aftermath reminded us of the terrific consequences of Holocaust distortion, denial and Antisemitism. They also reminded us that we need, we really need to redouble our efforts in order to prevent such disastrous developments.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Our current efforts, our current event focuses on our partners, colleagues and experts from the Western Balkans and Eastern countries.
I am confident they will benefit from our exchange of views today and they will be empowered to make the best of the Romanian model in their own countries, while minding regional realities and historical narratives.
I will conclude by congratulating the Prime minister's office for organizing this event and for fostering international partnerships that have made this event today possible!
I also wish to extend our appreciation to the co-sponsors of this event-the United States, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, in consultation with the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
Dear colleagues,
The purpose of our common actions should be to protect the fundamental values that Europe stands for: respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, democracy, rule of law.
We, as officials and as citizens of this challenging world, have the responsibility to stand by these values and to show their worth to the next generations.
To educate young people and encourage them to experience life in the spirit of tolerance and peace is an investment in our future.
Thank you!'
